Your tags
<title>Handmade Leather Wallets | Atlas Goods</title> <meta name="description" content="Slim leather wallets stitched by hand in small batches. Free shipping on orders over $50 and a lifetime repair promise." /> <link rel="canonical" href="https://www.example.com/wallets" /> <meta property="og:type" content="website" /> <meta property="og:title" content="Handmade Leather Wallets | Atlas Goods" /> <meta property="og:description" content="Slim leather wallets stitched by hand in small batches. Paste them inside <head>. Many site builders and SEO plugins have fields for these instead.
Which tags matter
Three tags do most of the work. The title is the blue link in search results and the name of the browser tab. The meta description is often the grey text under it. The Open Graph tags (og:title, og:description and og:image) decide how the link looks when someone shares it in a chat or a social post. The canonical tag tells search engines which address is the real one when a page can be reached in more than one way.
Writing a title and description that get clicks
Put the words people search for near the start of the title and keep it under about 60 characters, so it is not cut off. Make the description a promise: what the reader gets from the page, in one or two plain sentences of 70 to 160 characters. Write a different pair for every page; repeated titles make pages compete with each other.
Google may rewrite them
Search engines sometimes show a different title or a passage from the page instead of your description, especially when yours is vague, stuffed with keywords or does not match the page. A clear, accurate title and description are the best way to keep yours. Link previews are more literal: most apps show exactly what your Open Graph tags say.
Frequently asked
- How long should a title and meta description be?
- Aim for 50 to 60 characters for the title and 70 to 160 for the description. Google cuts by pixel width rather than characters, so treat these as guides and check the preview.
- What size should the share image be?
- 1200 × 630 pixels works on LinkedIn, X, Facebook and WhatsApp. Keep text and faces away from the edges, because some apps crop the image to a square.
- Do meta keywords help SEO?
- No. Google has ignored the meta keywords tag for years, so this generator does not write one. Spend the time on the title, the description and the page itself.
- Why does my old preview still show after I change the tags?
- Apps cache link previews. LinkedIn's Post Inspector and Facebook's Sharing Debugger can refresh them; other apps update after a while.
